Sarah Palin
So Governor Palin quit last week. Speculation is all over the place that this has something to do with setting herself up to campaign full-time. I have a very hard time believing this one. Being a governor gives you a status when you travel, a platform so to speak which gets us attention. Despite her admitted star power, it seems like political suicide to quit halfway through her first term.
Here’s my theory, well, two of them. My first theory is that the big one is coming. By big one, I mean huge scandal, either political or personal. Maybe even some infidelity (not that this really matters, politicians are people too, and their lives can be fucked up like everyone else’s). My second theory, is that she is putting the well-being of her family ahead of her political career, in which case I wish her the best. The media has been awfully hard on her family, her children especially. While I find this distasteful, I also think she brought most of it on herself. Let’s take the Bush twins and Chelsea Clinton as an example. Except for one minor arrest of one of Bush’s daughters, the media pretty much left them alone. Why different treatment for the Palin kids? Sarah put them out there in the spotlight, as if to say, “look at my kids.” I can understand being proud of your family and wanting others to see it, but when you do this, the sensationalist media is going to see it as a license to attack. When she was pointied them out in speeches and put them on TV, in a way they ceased being children of a public figure, and became public figures themselves. Actions have consequences. I think she learned that one the hard way.
Anyways, I don’t really care if she’s in or out. Her polarizing stance on abortion will prevent her from ever achieving legendary status. Personally though, I think she was the last great hope of the Republican Party. With her out, the party is dead (unless she seeks some sort of party leadership).
I think this is great. When all this dust settles and the Republican and Democrats make their merger into the “big spending party” complete, my party will be the only one left that stands for something different, for smaller government, for individual choice and responsibility of government intrusion.
Anyways, I need to start getting ready for my real job. A pungent aroma surrounds my highly intellectual self, and I believe a shower is necessary.
See ya!
